Episode 19: Dr. Cheese

🤓Top 5 Takeaways😎

  1. Trying to be "Normal" is an exhausting goal.
  2. Many Insecurities come from resisting parts of ourselves we cannot change.
  3. People will form well-Intended opinions regardless of how much we explain ourselves.
  4. Self-compassion is more powerful than self-Demonisation.
  5. Acceptance, not perfection, is where genuine Healing begins.

🤔Main Message🤯

We spend so much energy trying to explain, justify, and 'Fix' ourselves so that other people will understand us. Real Freedom comes when we stop fighting who we are, accept our Quirks and challenges, and allow ourselves the same Compassion we readily offer everyone else.

Dr. Cheese and the Trap of Trying to Be "Normal"

Opening: China, Work, and Unexpected Insecurities (1:19 – 4:00)

  • Brief update on travel to Hangzhou and hosting colleagues from New Zealand.
  • Realisation that having colleagues around highlighted personal insecurities.
  • Reflection on living with OCD, personality quirks, and health challenges.
  • Recognition that the biggest struggle wasn't the conditions themselves.
  • The struggle was expecting yourself to be "normal."

Sacred Routines and Self-Judgment (4:00 – 7:00)

  • Meal times are an important part of self-care and Emotional Balance.
  • Business travel disrupts carefully maintained routines.
  • Anxiety increases when familiar Coping Mechanisms are unavailable.
  • The moment routines are challenged:
    • Self-doubt appears.
    • Self-consciousness increases.
    • The urge to explain and justify yourself intensifies.

The Business Trip Setup (7:00 – 9:00)

  • Arriving at a cheese manufacturing site in China.
  • Warm hospitality expressed through food.
  • Difficulty participating because of food sensitivities and dietary needs.
  • Feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable despite good intentions from others.
  • Recognition that constantly trying to appear "normal" was setting yourself up for failure.

Key Takeaway

The more I expected myself to be normal, the more stress and suffering I created for myself.

Dr. Cheese's Diagnosis and the Power of Self-Acceptance

Meeting Dr. Cheese (0:00 – 4:00)

  • Introduction to a senior executive who became fascinated by my health situation.
  • Initial conversations around coffee, nutrition, health, and traditional remedies.
  • Good intentions mixed with confident assumptions.
  • Discovery of Raynaud's condition triggered concern and attention.

The Legendary Diagnosis Session (4:00 – 7:00)

  • What should have been a technical debrief became a 20-minute discussion about Summer's health.
  • Dr. Cheese confidently diagnosed a range of issues.
  • Recommendations included:
    • Eating more
    • Traditional Chinese remedies
    • Dietary changes
    • Various explanations for symptoms
  • Equal parts:
    • Humorous
    • Embarrassing
    • Absurd
  • Realization that everyone in the room was probably wondering what was happening.

The Bigger Lesson (7:00 – 10:00)

  • Powerful realization:
    • People will always make assumptions.
    • People will create explanations.
    • People will form opinions.
  • No amount of explanation can fully control how others interpret us.
  • Trying to justify every quirk, diagnosis, limitation, or personality trait is exhausting.
  • Most of that energy is wasted.

Self-Acceptance Is the Real Medicine (10:00 – End)

  • Reflection on spending decades being hard on yourself.
  • Growing commitment to:
    • Self-compassion
    • Self-acceptance
    • Psychological safety
  • True healing doesn't come from being fixed.
  • It comes from accepting yourself and surrounding yourself with people who do the same.

Key Takeaway

The real medicine isn't convincing people to understand us. It's learning to accept ourselves, quirks and all.
